One year's Nothobranchius korthausae Livonia, Michigan In January of 1973 Edith Kotjhaus visited the island of Mafia where she found a new Nothobranchius which was subsequently described under the name of N. korthausae Meinken 1973. The island of Mafia belongs to Tanziana (East Africa). It is part of the Comorens (Cornaro Islands) in the Mozambique Channel. Several of the fish were brought back to Germany alive and given to Dr. Walter Foersch who was successful in breeding them and they have since been distributed to killie breeders throughout the world. N. korthausae is a very beautiful killie. As for a description, I guess the quickest way to describe it is to say that the first thoughts of all who see it are that it is a yellow variation of N. rachovii. However, a comparison of the morphological data revealed that N. korthausae is a separate species. In N. korthausae, yellow replaces the orange of N. rachovii. A closer look will also turn up other variations in coloring. The males are basically yellow with a dark red outline on each scale giving the fish an overall reticulated pattern. The dorsal and anal fins are yellow with very fine black or dark blue lines along the rays. The dorsal has a wide sub-margin of speckled black and the anal has a thin black sub-margin. Both fins have a pure white outer margin. The caudal is, again, basically yellow with 6 or 7 vertically arched crossbars of black or dark blue. The white margin is present on the caudal fin also. Pectorals are transparent, slightly amber with white to pale blue tips (depending on lighting). Females are the usual drab pinkish color of other Nothobranchius females. All fins are transparent. Males will sometimes grow as large as S.S em in the aquarium but 3.5 to 4.0 em is the usual size reached. N. korthausae is handled in the same manner as other Nothobranchius species. The incubation time of the eggs is considerably shorter, however, with only 3 weeks required. It is rumored that the eggs can be water incubated for the same length of time, but my experience, so far, has been negative in that respect and more experimenting is necessary.
