• The feeding pattern that emerges is overwhelmingly insectivor- ous, with terrestrial insects fallen into the water predominating. Of these, ants proved to be the single most numerous item, a datum which mirrors their at times all too evident abundance in the over- hanging vegetation growing along the banks of this fish's prefered habitat. Mosquito larvae are a minor item in the feeding pattern. This reflects the scarcity of mosquito larvae in the flowing-water habitats frequented by this species, as none were ever taken there, even when a seine of double ply mosquito netting was utilized to ascertain their presence. Aquarium-kept individuals will devour mosquito larvae at all instars with as much relish as E. bifasciatus (Loiselle, 1969b). Unlike this species, E. sexfasciatus will also accept mosquito pupae immediately and devour them with enthusiasm. A few specimens from fish-culture ponds at Kpodzi and from the flooded footpath habitat at Bokotou contained the recognizable re- mains of small fish in their stomachs. The Kpodzi fish had fed upon fry of Tilapia macrochir just emerged from the female's buccal cavity while the Bokotou fish had taken small specimens of an unde- scribed pigmy Barbus species. It is very possible that the presence of these items in the stomachs of individual E. sexfasciatus represents an artifact produced by the unavoidable destablization of the environ- ment when netting fish for study, thus resulting in items coming within range of the E. sexfasciatus that do not ordinarily enter into its diet. Despite its willingness to devour mosquito larvae when these are present in its surroundings, it seems unlikely that this species will ever merit serious consideration as a mosquito control agent. First of all, it is a fluvial species, and does best in habitats where mosquito larvae populations are but slightly developed. Secondly, as a forest-dwelling species, it is less tolerant of variations in water chemistry and tem- perature than is E. bifasciatus, a species adapted to the extremes of the savanna environment (Loiselle op. cit.). Lastly, it displays a markedly seasonal pattern of reproductive activity in nature (vide infra) which, while not impossible to overcome in captivity, still places this species at a disadvantage when a choice is available between its culture and that of a more flexible species.
