Fundulus pulvereus

• Fundulus pulvereus(Evermann) - Bayou Killifish - It ocurrs from miles east of Mobile, Alabama, westward along the coast to at least Corpus Christi, Texas. Usually found in brackish water. They grow about 3" in length. The male is vertical silvery bars on the sides. The dorsal has a black(s) above white spot(s) at the base of the pigmented. A number of spangles cover the back and into the caudal fin. In breeding color, the belly of the male has an orange hue. The females are generally brownish covered with irregular dark spots and blotches on the sides. This species and the one above are separated by only a few miles and are presumed to be closely related and may be subspecies rather than full species. Fundulus diaphanus (LeSueur) - Maritime Provinces south along Carolina, and from the eastern parts of the Dakotas southeastward across the Great Lakes states Pennsylvania. Typically a fresh-water brackish water. It prefers muddy brooks and ponds where there is vegetation. They reach approximately greenish and sport about 20 irregular, narrow, vertical bars on their sides. Over this is a light blue cast. The fins are light gray and transparent, sometimes with a thin black margin.
