• A NEW SPECIES OF APHYOSEMION (TELEOSTOMI: CYPRINODONTIDAE: RIVULINAE) FROM GHANA, AND A REDEFINITION OF SUBGENUS FUNDULOPANCHAX MYERS, 1924. Akosombo1 and David Blair Glasgow2 Aphyos!'mion seymouri sp. nov., an annual cyprinodontid from the Accra Plains of Ghana, is described. Data on habitat, ecology, range and life history are presented. Affini ties with other rivulins are considered. Major evolutionary lines within the subgenus Fundulopanchax Myers sensu lulu are discussed. This subgenus is considered to include only Aphyosemion sjoestedti Lonnberg, A. gulare Blgr., an undescribed species from Meko in Western Nigeria, and A. seymouri sp. nov. Stenholt-Clausen (1967) defined the range of Aphyosemion as east of the Togo-Dahomey gap (the western boundary of this zone of in trusive savannah is taken as the Volta River) with the e�ception of Aphyosemion walkeri (Blgr., 191 1) described from the rain - forest isolate in Western Ghana. In June 1968, one of us (DB) collected a Nothobranchius-like rivulin from a small temporary pool in the Accra Plains, 55 miles east of Accra, the capital of Ghana. A few fish were sent to the United Kingdom in 1968 and 1969 and introduced to killi fish hobbyists as Aphyosemion BKA- U 1. Some of this material was also sent to Colonel J. J. Scheel for study. On the basis of cephalic squamation and egg type, Scheel (in litt.) identified the fish as an Aphyosemion and recognized it as an undescribed species. The laboratory work for this description was undertaken by the senior author while the second author provided range data and ob servations on the fish's biology and furnished the specimens of the type series.
