It is separated from that fish by the shape of the caudal, whose median rays are prolonged to an accentuated point, whereas on the other hand this fin in Boulenger's species is 'indented, some of the rays above and below are prolonged.' H. chevalieri illustrates certain characters in common with H. cameronensis Boulenger (Ann. Mag. Nat. Hist.,

Pellegrin studied only three specimens, 4 7, 48, and 48 mm in length, but did not state whether this was standard or total length. Neither did he include a drawing of the fish with this original description, and the lack of any pictures probably explains why this fish does not ap- pear in aquarium texts, other than Sterba's comprehensive treatise. In that work, Sterba reported a color description more detailed than Pellegrin's own, stated that the fish was introduced to the hobby in 1950 but that no breeding reports were known,* and again did not photograph nor draw the fish. Two characteristics serve to indicate Epiplatys chevalieri; the low dorsal count, and the presence of a lower red line formed by the scale dots running together. Under poor con- ditions, as in the shop, both sexes illustrated a heavy dark gray to blackish band along the lower sides, and the pretty coloration charac- teristic of this species was absent. *Roloff (1954) supplied breeding data. Meinken's reports were not seen by the present writer
