I am new to keeping Killifish, let me start out by saying that. I could really use some advice. I have a pair of fundolopanchax sjostedti (Warri) that I would very much like to breed. The research that I’ve done is kind of all over the place in recommendations for tank size for breeding. Any information, suggestions, common sense recommendations, any and all information would be greatly appreciated 😁. There is no such thing as too much information in my mind so please be as wordy as you would like. Thank you so much in advance.
Hi Martha,
Welcome to the hobby! The Fp. sjoestedti is a stunning choice, but raising them is very different compared to smaller killies. Since they are such a large species, a 10-gallon is the absolute bare minimum for a young pair, but a 20 to 40-gallon tank is much better for letting them reach their full size and managing aggression. Males are notorious “hard drivers” and can easily harass a single female to death. If you have a pair, I would recommend separating the female for conditioning / recovery and putting them together for limited times to collect eggs. If you have a group another breeding method is a group setup in a larger tank which forces the males to distract each other while the dominant one breeds. Just make sure the tank is packed with plenty of cover like large bottom mops, Java moss, or other plants so the females always have a safe haven retreat to.
