Size

3·5 cm in males with females slightly smaller.

Type Locality

Bafing River, at a bridge between Dabola & Timbo in Guinee.

Distribution

Widely distributed in north & central Guinee. They are replaced to the east by Rhex.nimbaensis & Rhex.kabae to the west.

Habitat

Found in rivulets in primary forest containing clear flowing water over a sand base. Depth of water has been measured at 30 cm. Water temperature 18 - 26°C, pH acid. Fish are found in midwater regions in schools. Reported to prefer quieter areas of streams.
Eggs are layed on aquatic plants & overhanging roots.
Sympatric sp. include Script.guignardi.

Killi-Data puts Daget & Lambert as discoverers of this sp. ? Daget collected them from the type locality in 1952, also at Kinkalabé & Télimélé in 1958.
Collected by Teugels in 1986 at Baraya near Konkouré & in 1987 at Sokotoro.

Breeding Notes

Lays eggs close to the surface in mops or floating plants. Some movement in the water is preferred. Sand base.
Eggs can be sensitive & some breeders prefer the natural method of letting the eggs hatch in the breeding tank. Parents reportedly do not predate their young.
Water incubation period around 14 days. Fry are capable of taking newly hatched brine shrimp on hatching. Young will sex out around 5 months of age & become mature in 7 months.
Reported life expectancy in aquaria 3 years.

Remarks

Not often seen in captivity (2003). This sp. is easily frightened when kept in captivity & a tank with plently of plants as cover should be provided. Water changes need to be done on a regular basis.
