Masei River (Type locality) - Collected by Poll in 1941.

Mount Nimba (area) - Collected by Daget in 1948.

N'zerekore - Collected by Olsen in 1963-64.

Pellegrin is known to have collected in western Ivory Coast in 1934. Also, Etzel & Putz collected them from an unknown location.

It's interesting in viewing a photo online from a German site when asking for an online translation it turns GF into AP.

Type Locality

A small, slow flowing creek in rainforest, coverered by tree canopy. Water was slightly brown stained, water temperature 20° C, maximum water depth 40cm.

Distribution

Inhabits a large area in northeastern Liberia, southwestern Guinea & western Ivory Coast.
Middle Sassandra River drainage, western Ivory Coast. Upper Saint Paul, upper Saint John & upper Cess River drainages, northern Liberia, Upper Saint John & Milo River drainages, eastern Guinea.

Habitat

Small streams, brooks & pools in areas of forested savannah.

Distinguishing Characteristics This is a robust species of rather drab colouration. The anal fin has a light blue border in the outer margin. The fish distributed as aff.maeseni has a red border in place of this light blue. Also, the anal has no markings, whereas maeseni has a spotted pattern in this fin.
Can be confused with Nimbapanchax melanopterygius. This species has no outer margin of pale blue in unpaired or ventral fins. Instead this outer margin is a deeper blue.
Colour/Pattern Variability Low
History

The holotype was collected at Foret Classeé de Dieke, southeastern Guinea by E.Busch & B.Wiese on 16th May 2006. This was collection code GF06 / 6.
Paratypes were collected by H.Olsen between November 1963 - February 1964 at N'zerekore, Guinea. Also E.Roloff in 1971 Salayea, Liberia. Also H.De Bruyn on 24th July 1980 in a rivulet near Déoulé, a small tributary of the Kilo River on a secondary road from Man to Biankouma, Ivory Coast.

History of the synonym Aphyosemion maeseni
First description - Poll M. 1941. Poissons nouveaux de la Cote d'Ivoire. Revue de Zoologie et de Botanique Africaines 34 (2): p 141-142, figure 5.
After Arne Maesen who participated in the collection of this species.
In 1941 Poll described Aphyosemion maeseni from a single specimen, probably a male, collected at the confluense of the Masei & Bon de Boan Rivers which feed into the Noun River at the border of Liberia & Ivory Coast. The fish was collected in 12-13 April 1939 by A.Maesen, F.M.Olbrechts & P.J.Vandenhoute.
Sonnenberg & Busch examined this holotype which turned out to be an Epiplatys sp. which invalidated the original description as Aphyosemion maeseni.
A new species was described under the new genus Nimbapanchax.
Scheel mentions in ROTOW 1 that no other material was published to date (at least until 1968).
Type Locality - Given as 'Confluence between the Masei River & the Bon de Boan River, a tributary of the Noun River, near the border with Liberia, western Ivory Coast' according to Wildekamp (World of Killies Vol I).

Breeding Notes

Reportedly not an easy species to breed. Eggs water incubate for around 14 days. Sexual maturity is reached at about 6 months.
