History

Known to have been in captive circulation since 1961 when Pierre Brichard exported them from Zaire (then Belgian Congo) to the USA. This shipment went under the name Aphyosemion lujae. In 1976 Lambert had information that they had been collected around Lutete. Also in 1976 Lambert & Wildekamp studied the identification of the species & concluded they belonged to ogoense rather than the elegans group.

Breeding Notes

I maintained the Lutete population in the early '80's & found them easy to breed in typical mop spawning fashion. Eggs were removed daily & took 14-21 days of water incubation. Growth rate is quite fast & sexual maturity is attained around 5 months.

Colin Kilgour in BKA newsletter No. 382, July 1997 wrote an article. Pair set up in 75% rain & 25% demineralised water, pH 6 - 6·5, conductivity 40µs, water temperature 76-77°F. A water change of 20% carried out each week. Eggs were water stored at 76°F & started to hatch in 16 days. Newly hatched brine shrimp was the first food.

Remarks

A colour photo appears in the Pet Library series 'Enjoy Your Killifish' page 3 titled A.striatum. This is the ottogartneri distributed in the USA as A.lujae.
