Aphyosemion omega Sonnenberg R. 2007

Meaning of Name

After the Greek - omega which means 'the end'. This refers to the phylogenic position with A.alpha as 'the beginning'.

C 01 / 62 - Collected by Kullmann, Misof & Sonnenberg in 2001 in Cameroon. In a stream which crossed the old road from Douala to Edea near Bonepoupa.

ABK 07 / 133 - Sympatric with A.riggenbachi.

Type Locality

Old Cameroon Road from Douala to Edea in a small river called Ngo Njock close to the village Ndog Nyang. This location code CMM 7. Collected by Kämpf, Sonnenberg & Tränkner in 2000.

Distribution

North of Edea along the road linking Kopongo / Somakek to Bonepoupa.

Habitat

The type locality was a small forest stream around 0·2m deep with a width up to 3m. The bottom was made up of sand & gravel. No aquatic vegetation present..
Water temperature 26·6°C, air temperature 30°C, pH 6, electrical conductivity 10µS/cm. Sympatric species - E.infrafasciatus, A.ahli, A.franzwerneri, Procatopus sp., unidentified jueveniles of a clariid catfish.

Collections of fish in the area of distribution on A.omega were originally assigned to A.splendopleure but after Sonnenberg's revision they were split to A.omega as a new sp.
