History

First collected by Roman in 1966 in Equatorial Guinea.

In 1968 & 1969 Scheel collected in this country. There is a black & white photo of these fish & some drawings in existance.

In 2000 (GEMHS 2000) G.J.van Huijgevoort, F.J.Malumbres & J.San Juán de Torres collected & found Chromaphyosemion species in 16 locations. The then undescribed fish were called Chromaphyosemion Rio Muni.

Breeding Notes

Bill Drake in BKA newsletter No.539, Nov/December 2010 reports breeding the GEMLCG 2007 / 50 collection. This article contained a typo on the collection reference as MEGLCG which should not be used.
Rain water was used for breeding mixed with some old soft tank water to about 50/50. pH was 6·5 down to 5. No eggs observed over pH 7·5. Below pH 5 only a few eggs occaisionally seen. He found that in harder water fewer eggs were laid which disintegrated before hatching. Regular water changes were done. Eggs stopped being laid for 2 days after a change. Fish will takes breaks in producing eggs every few weeks where no eggs will appear for 2-3 weeks. Best temperature range 21-23°C. Above or below this range fewer to no eggs are laid as you move further away.
Males can get aggressive to females if they are not ready to spawn.
Parents do not predate their fry but larger fry/young fish will eat smaller fry & also eggs. Most eggs are laid in floating mops.
Hatching takes 14-17 days at a temperature of 22°C. The odd egg may take 21-40 days to hatch.
Fry are slow growing but take newly hatched brine shrimp or micro worm as a first food.
