History

During initial collections in the range of this species Chauche, Mallet, Poliak (1985 - CCMP 85 / 8 & 85 / 9) & also Eberl, Legros & Vlijm (1989 - C 89 / 33 & 89 / 47) reported differences with A.splendopleure which at the time were thought to be in this range.
Later, all Chromaphyosemion collected between Douala & Kribi were assigned the name sp.aff.splendopleure Dizangue.
In 2005 & 2006 J.F.Agnèse published DNA results of splendopleure. However, the results led to some confusion & Sonnenberg attempted to classify splendopleure populations on colouration. This led to the description of koungueense.
