Type Locality |
Near to Kondué on the River Sankuru in the Kasai Province, southern Zaire. |
Distribution |
Southern Zaire. Found in the upper & middle Kasai & Sankuru River Drainages. |
Habitat |
Known to inhabit forested areas in small streams (flowing over gravel) or other shallow areas. |
Distinguishing Characteristics |
Horizontal line on upper body. Boulenger's drawing of 1915 compared to Wildekamp's line drawing is interesting as they both show lines on the gill cover in a bottom left to top right pattern. Poll (1952) reported a lightly coloured band along the sides possible carmine (in life) from the gill cover to the caudal peduncle. |
Colour/Pattern Variability |
Unknown due to lack of live fish to study. Probably low. Computerised rendition of probable colouration (probably exaggerated). |
History |
Boulenger gives the following collectors / locations in his 1915 Catalogue.
Boulenger described the species in 1910 from three specimens collected at Kondue, Kasai, southern Congo which were collected by M.E.Luja. In 1924 Myers examined this preserved material & placed them in Aphyosemion in his revision of 1933. In 1952 Poll reported the species from Kondue, Sankuru & Kese in the Kasai drainage. Between 1974 - 1979 Tyson Roberts collected around Bena Tshadi. These could be ferranti. |
Breeding Notes |
Reportedly imported into Belgium & bred in an aquarium containing a sand base with leaf litter & a long top mop extending to the base. The water was not measured but the wild habitat is on the acid side. |
Diameter of Egg | Unknown. |
Remarks |
Reportedly only imported once (to Marcinelle,
Belgium). These fish were not spawned. This species is still something
of an unknown (year 2000). |
