HAH 98 / 296 - 10 km south of Kumba. A.splendopleure (26), Fundulopanchax sp. (3), Epiplatys infrafasciatus (1), Malapterus electricus (1), Neolebias sp. (7), Barbus sp. (1), Mormyriidae kept alive, not preserved, Cichlidae seen but not taken. Collected 1st December 1998. Location: A small stream about 10 km south of Kumba, on the Kumba to Buea road. Just before Ediki. A side stream off of a large stream (Kumba) bridged over by the road. Very shallow and narrow, with a some slow flowing sections and leaf litter. Light colored sandy bottom. Clean, clear water. pH 6.2 TDS 10 µSi 0.01. Elevation: 289 m
HAH 98 / 298 - Kumba - Beau road. A.splendopleure (43), A.calliurum (43), Epiplatys infrafasciatus (17), Cichlidae caught but not taken. Collected 1st. Dec. Location: A small stream flowing through a coco-yam field about 1 km south of the Muyuka police checkpoint, on the Kumba to Buea road. Reasonably moving water, but overall very shallow with numerous quite areas. Soft muddy bottom composed of fine organic particles. Clean, clear water with the lightest tinge of tea. pH 6.9 TDS 20 µSi 0.01. Elevation: 241 m
HAH 98 / 301 - A.loennbergii (4), Epiplatys infrafasciatus (12), Cichlidae seen but not taken. Collected 4th Dec. Location: A small stream about 2·9 km north of the Dibang turn-off from the Edéa to Yaoundé highway. Stream flows from west to east. Relatively slow flowing creek with a number of quiet pools and areas. Light colored, sandy bottom, in part covered with leaf litter. Clean, clear water with tinge of tea. pH 6.3 TDS 10 µSi 0.01. HAH 98 / 302 - A.loennbergii (2), A.riggenbachi (2), Aphyosemion franzwerneri (1), Aphyosemion ahli (5), Epiplatys infrafasciatus (6), Procatopus sp. (4), Eleotriidae (3), Cichlidae seen but not taken. Collected 4th Dec. Location: The first stream on the Somakak turn-off from the old Edéa to Douala highway. Stream flows from north to south. Relatively fast flowing creek with a only a few quiet pools and areas. Light colored, sandy bottom. Few rest-water areas are covered with leaves, as are areas behind sandbars. Clean, very lightly turbid, but clear water with tinge of tea. pH 6.3 TDS 10 µSi 0.01. Elevation: 241 m
HAH 98 / 303 - Mile 29 A.volcanum (48), Epiplatys infrafasciatus (11), Chromidotilapia sp. (2), Mastacembellus sp. (1). Collected 6th Dec. 1998. Although the population Mile 29 has the appearence of poliaki, after DNA results by Agnèse it belongs to volcanum.
Mile 29, on the road from Kumba to Buea, about 5 km south of the Muyuka police checkpoint. The stream flows from east to west with the eastern portion (fished) almost waist deep, partly covered with leaves, on the edges submerged grasses and overhanging vegetation. Adjoining marshy area. In general very plant rich area, exposed to sun, and not much like a 'typical' killifish habitat. Dark colored, sandy bottom. Clean, clear water. pH 6.8 TDS 130 µSi 0.19. Elevation: 120 m
HAH 98 / 304 - About 0·5 km south of the Mile 17 A.poliaki (35), Barbus sp. (2). Collected 6th Dec. Location: About 0·5 km south of the Mile 17 junction (Buea, Muea, Muntengene), on the main road from Buea to Douala, in Bolifamba. A side road going west to the Rehabilitation Center for the Blind. First creek on the path, about 0.5 km inland. The stream flows from north to south and is not very rapid. Western side of the stream is cultivated with bananas and coco-yams. The stream itself is has a number of fallen trees, emergent reed like vegetation and numerous areas with caugh organic debris. Fish are found in more quiet areas behind fallen trees. Exposed to sun, and not much like a ‘typical’ killifish habitat. Dark colored bottom composed of large pebbles. Clean, clear water. pH 8.0 TDS 100 µSi 0.14. Elevation: 410 m.
HAH 98 / 305 - Mile 17 A.poliaki (68), Epiplatys infrafasciatus (4), Barbus sp. (42). Collected 6th Dec. Location: About 0.5 km south of the Mile 17 junction (Buea, Muea, Muntengene), on the main road from Buea to Douala, in Bolifamba. A side road going west to the Rehabilitation Center for the Blind. HAH 98 / 306 - Near Moliwe A.splendopleure (24), Epiplatys infrafasciatus (17), Procatopus sp. (3), Barbus sp. (2), Chromidotilapia sp. (7). Collected 6th Dec. Location: A large stream on the road from Buea to Limbe, just past Moliwe. A large, rapid stream flowing from north to south. There are only a very few more quiet areas. Fish are found either in the more quiet areas, but predominantly in the partly submerged grasses and reeds overhaning the banks of the stream. Exposed to sun, and not much like a ‘typical’ killifish habitat. Dark colored bottom composed of large pebbles and boulders. Clean, clear water. pH 8.1 TDS 120 µSi 0.18. Elevation: 230 m.
HAH 98 / 308 - West of Somakak A.riggenbachi (90) (46+44), A.ahli 23x (19+4), Aphyosemion sp. ? (1), Epiplatys infrafasciatus (27) (15+12), Procatopus sp. (50) (38+12), Mormyriidae (1), Eleotriidae (4) (1+3), Barbus sp. seen but not taken. Collected 7th Dec. Location: A small but fast flowing stream on the Somakak turn-off from the old Edéa to Douala highway. The first stream just west of Somakak. Stream flows from south to north, crossing the road. About 200 meters down stream joins with the main tributary. The main tributary is relatively slow flowing, in parts deep and with numerous quiet areas. Only very few of the rest-water areas are covered with leaves, but there are a lot of semi-emergent Anubias. Light colored, sandy bottom. Clean, clear water with tinge of tea. South of the road is backed up, and flooded, with dead trees and a lot of leaf litter. pH 6.2 TDS 10 µSi 0.02. Elevation: 137 m.
HAH 98 / 309 - West of Somakak A.loennbergii (22), A.riggenbachi (5), A.ahli (7), Epiplatys infrafasciatus (4), Eleotriidae (1), Barbus sp. seen but not taken. Collected 7th Dec. Location: A small stream on the Somakak turn-off from the old Edéa to Douala highway. The first stream west of Somakak. Stream flows from south to north, is relatively slow flowing, in parts deep and with numerous quiet areas. Only very few of the rest-water areas are covered with leaves, but there are a lot of semi-emergent Anubias. Light colored, sandy bottom. Clean, clear water with tinge of tea. pH 6.4 TDS 10 µSi 0.02. HAH 98 / 310 - Edéa to Younde (Pouma turn off) A.loennbergii (46), Epiplatys infrafasciatus (4), Mormyriidae (2). Collected 7th Dec. Location: A small stream on the Pouma turn-off from the Edéa to Younde highway. A stream just before the Log Sambo turnoff. The stream crosses under the road east to west, but is inaccessible. A small trail leads to the east of the road. The stream is slow flowing, in parts deep, surrounded by bamboo. There are numerous areas which accumulated fallen bamboo leaves and other organic debris. Light colored, loamy to sandy bottom which is in parts soft. Clean, clear water with a light tinge of tea. pH 6.3 TDS 10 µSi 0.02. Elevation: 125 m
HAH 98 / 311 - Near Hegba Pouma village. A.loennbergii (28), Epiplatys infrafasciatus (9). Collected 7th Dec. Location: A small stream on the Pouma turn-off from the Edéa to Younde highway. A stream just past the village of Hegba Pouma. The stream crosses under the road west to east, but a better access leads in from a small trail to the west of the road. The stream is slow flowing, but generally deep, with many fallen logs. It is heavily overgrown by vegetation, with many grasses and boggy vegetation around the edges of the water. The bottom appears of lighter colored, loamy to sandy and in parts soft. Clean, clear water with a light tinge of tea. pH 6.7 TDS 30 µSi 0.04. Elevation: 130 m
HAH 98 / 312 - Bako Ngoma A.loennbergii (20), A.cameronense died during tranport, Epiplatys esekanus ? (23). Collected 7th Dec. Location: A small turn-off south about 4 km east of Pouma on the Edéa to Younde highway. Sign said “Bako Ngoma”. Dirt road which after about 2 km comes to a small wooden bridge over a slow stream. Before the bridge is a nice access to the stream. The flows west to east, and then north to south once crossing under the road. The stream is slow flowing, wide with little vegetation. The stream is heavily shaded. A dead side arm full of fallen leaves and other organic matter and soft mud (knee deep) is on the left side about 200 meters down stream. Otherwise the bottom is light colored, and sandy. Clean, clear water with a tinge of tea.
Notes: Chromaphyosemion ID according to Eberl (1996). In this and the two previous localities we have been primarily looking for Aphyosemion amoenum which according to Dadaniak et al. (1995) should be common in this area. Due to low light conditions (shade and 4:30 pm), it was not until we looked at the fish in the car that we realized we had a young trio of Aphyosemion cameronense. The fish were taken alive, but died during transport, and then were discarted by Nevin Aspinwall. Thus no final ID could be made. pH 6.4 TDS 10 µSi 0.03. Elevation: 120 m.
HAH 98 / 313 - Afan Essokie A.lugens (24), A.ahli (62), Epiplatys infrafasciatus (17), Procatopus sp. (3), Malapterus electricus (1), Eleotriidae (3). Collected 8th December. Location: Afan Essokie, on the road from Campo inland. The site is 13 km east of the main intersection (X) which constitues newly build logging roads and old roads. It is just past the village of Afan Essokie. A medium sized stream, largely shaded with few quiet areas. Old logging trail and stream crossing leads to a more opened sections with a small backwater full of Anubias and leaves. Relatively small amount of organic debris in the stream. Light colored, and sandy bottom. Clean, clear water with a tinge of tea. pH 6.4 TDS 00 µSi 0.00. Elevation: 97 m.
HAH 98 / 314 - Bibabivotou A.(Chromaphyosemion) sp. 4 (52), A.ahli (4), Epiplatys infrafasciatus (15), Clarias sp. (1). Collected 8th Dec. Location: Bibabivotou, on the road from Campo inland. The site is 4 km east of the main intersection (X) which constitues newly build logging roads and old roads, and just 9 km west of the Aphyosemion lugens type locality. Shortly east of the village. A relatively large stream, however, just of the road and a washing place is a large quiet area full of fallen leaves, trees and in places knee deep mud. The whole area is highly shaded with no visible aquatic vegetation. Otherwise the main portion of the stream has light colored, sandy bottom. Clean, clear water with a relatively strong tinge of tea. pH 5.8 TDS 10 µSi 0.01. Elevation: 83 m.
HAH 98 / 315 - Etonde Fang A.splendopleure (35), A.ahli (14), Epiplatys infrafasciatus (19), Malapterus electricus (1). Collected 8th Dec. Location: Etonde Fang, on the road from Kribi to Campo, about 10 km north of Campo. A small sized stream flowing east to west, largely shaded with numerous quiet areas. Relatively small amount of organic debris in the stream. Light colored, and sandy bottom. Clean, clear water with a tinge of tea. pH 6.4 TDS 10 µSi 0.02. Elevation: 25 m.
HAH 98 / 316 - Near Lende A.splendopleure (28). Collected 9th Dec. Location: On the road from Kribi to Ebolowa, near Lende. A small sized stream flowing south to north. Currently it looks very disturbed due to bridge building. Fished downstream which was accessible. Light colored, and sandy bottom and forest ground. There was also a lot of ferrous precipitant on the bottom of the stream, creating a very soft bottom. Most of the stream was very shallow, spreading into many backwaters which also contained leaves and other organic debris. Otherwise clean, clear water with a tinge of tea. pH 5.5 TDS 10 µSi 0.02. Elevation: 37 m.
HAH 98 / 325 - Bonepoupa A.riggenbachi (64), Epiplatys infrafasciatus (8). Collected 14th Dec. Location: Bonepoupa, on the old Edéa to Douala highway. About 1.5 km before the bridge over the Dibamba. A very small stream running east to west underneath the highway. Access is easiest on the eastern side of the road, through bamboo thickets. Medium fast flowing stream with a number of quiet areas in the main channel of the stream, and in a small stagnat side arm. the side arm is full of leaves and other organic debris. Light colored sandy bottom with some portion of loam. Clear, clear water. pH 6.4 TDS 20 µSi 0.03. Elevation: 100 m.
HAH 98 / 327 - Near Bombingué A.splendopleure (1), Epiplatys infrafasciatus (20). Collected 17th December. Location: Near Bombingué, on the road from Kribi to Campo. A relatively deep stream with much fallen vegetation. Numerous quiet areas. The stream appears to be regularly backed up by the sea, yet salt water does not seem to enter. Relatively small amount of organic debris in the stream. Some Anubias upstream. Light colored, and sandy bottom. Clean, clear water. pH 5.6 TDS 10 µSi 0.01. Elevation: 10 m.
HAH 98 / 328 - Just south of Lolabé A.splendopleure (10), A.ahli (8), Epiplatys infrafasciatus (8). Collected 17th Dec. Location: Just south of Lolabé, on the road from Kribi to Campo. A very small sized stream flowing east to west, largely shaded with a few quiet areas. The stream is also short, and just upstream of the road it is rocky with a series of cascades. Organic debris is accumulated around the edges. Anubias grows along the edges. Near the road is an opened area with grasses growing in the water. This area is also used for soaking casava. Light colored, and sandy bottom, but in the open area near the road it is quite silty. Otherwise clean, clear water. pH 5.7 TDS 00 µSi 0.01. Elevation: 32 m.
HAH 98 / 330 - Near Bibou A.loennbergii (12), A.ahli (3), Epiplatys infrafasciatus (7), Ctenopoma nanum (12), Pelvicachromis sp. collected but not preserved. Collected 18th Dec. Location: On the road leading from Kribi to Lolodorf, just past Bibou. A small streamflowing across the road in a south to north direction. In the southern section it is backed up to form an extensive flooded area with inundated palms and bamboo, which is quite deep and with soft bottom. A lot of leaf litter, grasses and branches in the water. Light colored, and fine loamy bottom. Otherwise clean, clear water with a very light tinge of tea. pH 5.6 TDS 00 µSi 0.01. Elevation: 80 m.
HAH 98 / 331 - Near Bibou A.loennbergii (29), A.ahli (32), A.heinemanni (2), Epiplatys infrafasciatus (22), Ctenopoma nanum (1), Auchenipterus sp. (2). Collected 18th Dec. Location: On the road leading from Kribi to Lolodorf, shortly before Bibou. A small stream flowing across the road in a south to north direction. Fished the northern section which is shallow, but relatively fast flowing, with numerous side areas containing organic debris and leaves. Also a small gravel ‘island’ in the middle of the stream with accumulated organic debris. The stream is completely shaded by the forest. Light colored with a tone of red, and gravely bottom. Otherwise clean, clear water with a very light tinge of tea. pH 6.0 TDS 10 µSi 0.01. Elevation: 75 m.
HAH 98 / 332 - Kribi - Lolodorf Road A.loennbergii (22), A.ahli (4), A.heinemanni (4), Epiplatys infrafasciatus (12). Collected 18th Dec. Location: On the road leading from Kribi to Lolodorf. A small stream flowing across the road in a north to south direction. The stream is partly shaded by the forest. It is accessible from a trail leading to the north section. Some stagnant sections have ferrous scum and settlement. This is evidently the slow section of the stream, as water trickles in over backed up debris from the forest upstrea. Very soft muddy bottom, with a lot of accumulated organic debris, consisting largely of grasses, and leaves. Light colored, and fine loamy bottom. Otherwise clean, clear water. pH 6.0 TDS 10 µSi 0.01. Elevation: 75 m.
HAH 98 / 333 - Kribi - Lolodorf Road A.loennbergii (9), A.ahli (9), A.heinemanni (6), Epiplatys infrafasciatus (7), Procatopus sp. (1). Collected 18th Dec. Location: On the road leading from Kribi to Lolodorf. A small stream flowing across the road in a south to north direction. Heavily cluttered, and not easily accessible. Fished the northern section which is narrow, nearly knee deep channel, and relatively fast flowing. Little accumulation of organic debris and leaves. There are a few branches and trunks blocking the stream and trapping leaf litter. Areas in the forest around the stream appear to have been flooded, but contained no fish. The stream is completely shaded by the forest. Light colored, and fine sandy bottom. Otherwise clean, slightly cloudy water. pH 5.5 TDS 10 µSi 0.02. Elevation: 75 m.
HAH 98 / 334 - Kribi - Lolodorf Road A.loennbergii (30), A.ahli (1), Epiplatys infrafasciatus (3). Collected 18th Dec. Location: On the road leading from Kribi to Lolodorf. A small stream underneath a wooden bridge, flowing in a north to south direction. North of the road the area is flooded, deep and with Field Notes Version: January 23, 1999 anerobic organic matter on the bottom. Palms, edges, reeds etc. stand the water, as there Are many lillies. No fish caught in this section of the stream. South of the road banks are ligned with grasses. Then the stream enters deep forest and is completely shaded. Light colored, and finesandy bottom. Otherwise clean, cristal clear water with a tinge of tea. pH 5.7 TDS 10 µSi 0.02. Elevation: 70 m.
HAH 98 / 336 - Near Bivouba A.splendopleure (13), A.edeanum (1), Epiplatys infrafasciatus (8), Procatopus sp. (12), Mastacembellus sp. (1), Eleotriidae (1). Collected 18th Dec. Location: Westward turn-off near Bivouba on the road leading from Kribi to Edéa. A ood dirt road. Sampled the first stream which flows from north to south. North of the road it consists of a very soft, muddy area covered with palm fronds and fallen palms. The section south of the road has a nice flowing stream with few quiet areas on the sides. Some accumulation of organic matter along the edges. The stream is completely shaded. Light colored, and fine sandy bottom. Otherwise clean, cristal clear water with a very light tinge of tea. pH 5.9 TDS 10 µSi 0.01. Elevation: 100 m.
HAH 98 / 337 - Near Béon A.splendopleure (1), Eleotriidae (1). Collected 18th Dec. Location: Westward turn-off near Béon on the road leading from Kribi to Edéa, just south of Kribi. A short access road to the creek which is used as a carwash/laundry/swim-hole. Creek flows east to west. Collected in the eastern section away from people. A trail leads to the creek there as well. The stream is relatively large, deep and with numerou backwater areas. Soft, very deep mud and leaves are accumulated along the edges and among tree roots. The stream is completely shaded. Dark colored, muddy bottom. Otherwise clean, clear water with a light tinge of tea. pH 6.2 TDS 10 µSi 0.02. Elevation: 45 m.
HAH 98 / 338 - Malabo, Bioko A.(Chromaphyosemion) sp. Bioko (9), Fp.oeseri (15), Epiplatys infrafasciatus (6). Collected 22nd Dec. Location: Río Consul, Malabo, Bioko. The stream is partly shaded, with various organic debris and aquatic vegetation. Rock are present in the main stream. Dark colored, volcanic bottom. Otherwise clean, clear water. pH 7.8 TDS 70 µSi 0.09. Elevation: 55 m.
HAH 98 / 341 - Towards Dizangué A.splendopleure (23), Epiplatys infrafasciatus (19), Cichlidae seen but not taken. Collected 27th Dec. Location: The first turn south indicating Dizangué on the new highway leading from Douala to Edéa; just before a police checkpoint. Excellent dirt road. Approximately 5 km in one crosses a small stream. The area and the new settlement near by is called Solé. The stream barely trickes in from the southeast side of the road. A small pool area is formed next to the road, before the stream exits. In the stream proper, there is some overhanging vegetation on the side. Exposed to full sun. Light colored, sandy bottom. Clean, clear water. pH 5.7 TDS 00 µSi 0.01. Elevation: 56 m.
HAH 98 / 342 - Near Eboka A.splendopleure (47), A.edeanum (2), Epiplatys infrafasciatus (27), Procatopus sp. (6), Pelvicachromis sp. (1). Location: Westward turn-off near Eboka on the road leading from Kribi to Edéa. It appears to be the river Doumé. The easiest access is from the south of the bridge, despite the fast that a trail leads from the north of the bridge. A relatively fast flowing stream, in portions upto knee deep, but with numerous quiet areas around fallen trees, bamboo and sandbanks. To a large extent shaded by trees and bamboo. Some accumulation of organic matter along the edges. Light colored, and coarse sandy bottom. Clean, cristal clear water. pH 6.1 TDS 00 µSi 0.01.

HAH 98 / 343 - Towards Dizangué (2nd turning) A.splendopleure (73). Collected 27th Dec. Location: The second turn south indicating Dizangué on the new highway leading from Douala to Edéa; just before a police checkpoint, the turn north to Bonepoupa and the bridge over Sanaga. The road hugs the Sanaga, and after passing the brige spanning the outflow of Lac Ossa, it starts rizing. Within 300 meters of the bridge, just before the SEFACAM sign, one the south side of the road is a very small creek hugging the slope. The stream is completely shaded, and although tiny has several deep spots with some leaf litter and other organic debris. Light colored, fine sandy bottom. Clean, clear water. pH 6.2 TDS 00 µSi 0.01. Elevation: 100 m.
HAH 98 / 344 - 5km past Kopongo A.splendopleure (20), A.riggenbachi (1), Epiplatys infrafasciatus (8), Procatopus sp. (9), Eleotriidae (1). Collected 27th Dec. Location: Turn-off for the new Douala to Edéa highway from the old Douala to Edéa highway about 5 km past Kopongo. 2 km from the junction is a small but relatively rapidly flowing stream, but it is not well visible from the road. Well shaded, as it is in the forest. There are no real backwater areas, but the edges are sufficiently slow to accumulate some leaf litter. No aquatic vegetation, or overhanging vegetation. Light colored, medium coarse sandy bottom. Clean, clear water. pH 5.8 TDS 00 µSi 0.01. Elevation: 90 m.
HAH 98 / 346 - Buea - Douala Road A.splendopleure (47), Epiplatys infrafasciatus (1), Neolebias sp. (1), Ctenopoma kingsleyae (1). Collected 28th Dec. Location: The stream crosses the Buea to Doula highway in a north to south direction. It is ~1.5 km past the bridge over the Wuri in the direction of Douala. South of the road it disappears into a large innundated area. The stream is heavily used for washing, and for rinsing palm wine containers. It is about knee deep, but has numerous very deep areas obscured by semi-aquatic vegetation. Light colored, sandy bottom. Otherwise clean, clear water with a light tinge of tea. pH 5.6 TDS 10 µSi 0.02. Elevation: 60 m.
HAH 98 / 347 - Near Kombé A.splendopleure (11), A.calliurum (8), Epiplatys infrafasciatus (3). Collected 28th Dec. Location: On the road to Loum and Bamenda from the Buea to Doula highway, going north. A small creek, flowing east to west, heavily overgrown in the Mouyouka-Kompina forest reserve near Kombé. A realatively deep stream, with steep edges. Overhanging vegetation, grasses and fallen brush. In several areas fallen trees are trapping leaf litter. Light colored, sandy bottom, but with some silt. Portions downstream are flowing through what appreas to be volcanic soil/mud. Otherwise clean, clear water with a tinge of tea. pH 5.8 TDS 10 µSi 0.02. Elevation: 70 m.

Location: First creek after the Mungo river on the road from Loum to Kumba. Eutrophic conditions, with an algal scum underneath the bridge. A lot of grasses and branches on the edges of the water. Muddy bottom, volcanic soil. Clear, lightly colored water. pH 6.4 TDS 20 µSi 0.04. Elevation: 225 m.
