GJS 00

Collected by Robert Guggenbühl, Pascal Sewer & Mogens Juhl, July-August 2000, Gabon.
Species shown in red were brought back alive but the rest were preserved in alcohol & deposited in the Copenhagen University.
Non-killies were preserved in folmal/alcohol & deposited in the museum of Gabon.

 A.escherichi (micropthalmum)(put into alcohol for preservation), E.ansorgii (very red fins & a blue body covered with red dots. 1 female & 3 males survived the trip back to Denmark), Aplocheilichthys cf.spilauchen, Plataplocheilus cf ngaensis (?), Mastocembelus sp., Synodontis sp., Barbus holotaenia, Barbus sp., Clarias sp.
River 5-6 metres wide & 0·5 metres deep. Lots of fallen leaves around edges.

From the village of Massika a trail which was steep with dense vegetation in places goes to the river. This took 10-15 minutes to walk. River was 1-2 metres wide with a strong current. No vegetation in the water but on branches lying in the water Anubias barteri & Bolbitis ferns were growing. Air temperature was 25°C, water 22·3°C, pH 6·4, conductivity 14 µs.

On the west side of the road at Takamogikou in a stream called Boungoma. The joergenscheeli when bred in aquaria split into a very blue & very red form. Only 4 female hofmanni made it back to Europe.

Malinga

Just outside Malinga across a large stream. A place local women do there laundry. Some children showed the party a large lake about 1 km north from this stream. A.ocellatum were also collected there.

On the right of this lake a trail was followed for some time until a twisting stream was found. This location was where A.hanneloreae was found in previous trips. Only ocellatum & coeleste were found.
Further upstream past a log in the stream A.hanneloreae were found in a large area with a water depth of less than 2 cms. These were present in large numbers. Barbs & a new Ctenopoma (possibly nanum group). Water temperature 21·1°C, pH 5·9, conductivity 1 µs.

A clearing in the rainforest 20 kms from Mbigou between Lebamba & Ndende. A small stream crossing the road. Water temperature 21°C, pH 5·95, conductivity 6 µs. Elevation 540 metres. Stream was very narrow, only 20-40 cms wide. After a small waterfall the stream widened out to 2 metres. Young joergenscheeli were collected under the waterfall where the current was strongest. This population had a very strong blue colour.

Stream called the Modyambi in the middle of the village, crossing the road. This was a place the women wash there clothes. Fish collecting was done on the opposite side of the road. Water temperature 22°C, pH 6·2, conductivity 43 µs.
